Surpasses Many Expectations: Lupe Fiasco’s “Food and Liquor 2” Returns Hip Hop
to Its Original Story Telling State.
Being
known for his outspoken and as some would described brash comments in the media
in the last couple of years, as well as the disappointment in his last release
“Lasers”, the Chicago native Lupe
Fiasco seemed to have hit a wall in his musical career. Despite the pressure
against him, Lupe went back to his original story telling roots in his latest
album “Food and Liquor 2: The Great
American Rap Album Part 1”. The CD starts off with a powerful poetic into
titled “Ayesha Says,” (recited by poet Ayesha Jaco) which depicts the hardship
of the Chicago streets as well as any inner city community being trapped by
liquor stores, gang violence, and drugs. From here, Lupe takes you on a journey
filled with political, musical, and even philosophical commentary. Lupe opens with the line “I can’t pledge allegiance to your
flag” in “Strange Fruition”, which
basically can be described as an uplifting song for the African American
community, which has faced many obstacles since its arrival in the United
States, most of which are depicted by Lupe. In “ITAL (Roses),” Lupe calls for all hip hop artists to stop
glorifying “the norm” as in drugs, sex, and gang violence, and to instead give
those who are listening something worth listening to, something new and
empowering. The popular and somewhat controversial track “Bitch Bad” follows, which depicts the
misconception of the word “Bitch” in hip hop. All in
all, though not widely publicized in the media, Lupe Fiasco’s “Food and Liquor 2: The Great American Rap
Album Part 1” can be praised as one of the top albums of 2012, no question.
It’s an escape from the elementary mainstream hip hop we have seen as of late,
and also an empowering piece of work most could enjoy and relate too. Lupe is
clearly back to his old habits, and now has my ear for the second installment
of the Great American Rap Album.

The album titled “Life Is Good” captures the essence of life through Nas’s eyes. With songs like “Trust” and “Cherry Wine”, that features the late and great Amy Winehouse, Nas talks about his wants in life that include “a bitch I can trust, some niggas I can trust, accountants looking over my figures I can trust” and his “a-alike, someone that’ll talk me off the bridge any day or night.” Nas also talks about his failed marriage with Kelis through a nostalgic song titled “Bye Baby.” This album is what music has been missing. Nas’s genuine, heart-felt lyrics accompanied by the soulful voices of Amy Winehouse and Mary J. Blige has brought back the hip-hop that Nas himself claimed to have died. In my humble opinion, lyrically and production-wise, Life Is Good is the best album that I have heard in the past 5 years. This is one of those albums that you get high just listening to. When I think of Jhene, the first thing that comes to mind is that she is underrated. Her music is so beautiful and I think the whole world should know about it. Jhene reminds me of The Weeknd because their voices are so calming and their music relaxes me. Her latest mixtape is Sailing Souls which came out in March of 2011. She just recently came out with a video to her latest song "3:16am" which can be seen below. I really recommend you guys to check her out because you will not be disappointed. She is a wonderful artist and deserves a lot more recognition than she receives.

2 Chainz album has been leaked and I was very excited to listen to it because it received a lot of great responses on social networks. Damnn! Rick Ross fifth solo album leaks six days (July 25th) before its intended July 31st drop date. He already released singles from the album including the latest "3 Kings" which features Dr. Dre and Jay Z, so isn't that enough free music??? Guess not *kanye shrugs*. Ross is not upset about the situation suprisingly. The tweet below shows that he is aware that it's leaked but still wants his fans to purchase it.
I believe that alot of people will download the album since it is free but only the true fans will purchase the it on Tuesday. Below is the link to his latest single "3 Kings". Listen to it and decide on whether the album is worth purchasing. I believe it is, what do you think?
